A Modern Multisite-first Alternative to the User Profile Picture Plugin
From Ronald Huereca, the original author of the super simple “User Profile Picture” plugin, comes Avatars Plus, a Multisite-first avatar plugin for WordPress.
With User Profile Picture sold to Cosmozlabs and it being no longer maintained, a gap exists for a user-friendly avatar plugin that works great with WordPress Multisite. This plugin is coming soon.

A Multisite-first design
Choose one site’s media library (e.g., site ID 2) as the avatar hub. Fetch avatars across the entire network (site 3, 4, etc.) from that hub.
Set a global avatar that applies across every site.
Or override with site-specific avatars when needed.
Developers can easily retrieve and display the user avatar.
Frequently Asked Questions
The User Profile Picture plugin was created by Ronald Huereca (myself). It was sold to Cosmozlabs for a small amount in the hopes that development would continue. Unfortunately, the plugin is no longer being maintained, and there is still no decent avatar plugin available that supports Multisite. Hence, Avatars Plus.
After it became clear that User Profile Picture development wouldn’t continue, I began working on a Multisite-first concept for user avatars. The proof-of-concept is out, and development of the plugin is underway. The goal is to keep the settings minimal and the user interface as simple as you’re used to.
User Profile Picture doesn’t support Multisite, and its avatars are stored at the site level. I’m afraid compatibility isn’t possible due to the architectural differences.
I’m still working out pricing, after all, this plugin needs to be sustainable. I’m considering affordable tiers, with a free starter option planned.
Yes, the plugin will behave as a regular avatar plugin on single-site installs.
