Highlight and Share 5.0 (Holly) is out and comes loaded with new features such as image sharing. Holly Jahangiri helped me test this release, hence the honorary release name.
The new features include:
- Image Sharing: show Pinterest or Web Share when hovering over or viewing an image.
- Click to Share shortcode: allow a Click to Share box anywhere shortcodes are supported.
- Enable For Comments: enable Highlight and Share when selecting any text in the comment section.
Let’s go over what’s new in this release.
Image-sharing support, including the Web Share API
One neat new feature is image sharing. You can customize whether to enable Pinterest and the Web Share API on all supported post types.
In the admin, you’ll find a new Images tab, where you can customize the output and appearance of the image-sharing icons.
The Web Share API is relatively new, and I haven’t seen its use on images yet, so I added compatibility with the Web Share API in the 5.0 release.
Image sharing is a neat new feature, and I’m anxious to see how people will use it.
Click to Share shortcode support
One long-requested feature is the ability to output the Click to Share block as a shortcode.
With 5.0, this feature is now a reality. You can use a fully customizable shortcode to output a Click to Share block anywhere shortcodes are supported. It is also compatible with the Classic Editor and most page builders.
Comment text sharing
You have always been able to technically enable Highlight and Share on comments using a CSS selector, but now comments are native.
As an extra bonus, it also works well with the Ajax Commenting plugin Ajaxify Comments.
